The Glaciers' Treasure Trove: A Field Guide to the Lake Michigan Riviera
Published in Spiral-bound by Lexicus Pr (22 May, 2003)
Average review score:

Lake Michigan MagicI really liked this book. I have been visiting the Indiana-Michigan shoreline on and off again since the 1950's. I never understood the area as a whole until I read this book. It is truly a first rate resource -whether you are planning a weekend excursion or the whole summer along this part of Lake Michigan. I especially liked the spiral binding and the easy to read maps. The colors are magnificent. It is just the right size to keep in your glove compartment. I ordered three copies and plan to pass them on to my friends.
Amazing publicaton:Obviously a labor of love. A must have addition to the collection for the serious lover of "the dunes". Finely researched from an author who has been there, soon to become the definitive study of the area. Well written, glorious photgraphs, many by the author herself. It serves the first time visitor well, yet also enlightens the veteran repeat visitor or resident. A great gift idea.....
Locations, contact information, & extensive descriptionsThe Glaciers' Treasure Trove: A Field Guide To The Lake Michigan Riviera by Jacqueline Widmar Stewart is a full-color travel guide to the sights, lakes, vineyards, state parks and other attractions of the area. Locations, contact information, extensive descriptions and photographs on every page characterize and enhanced this exceptionally useful, on-the-go, "pocket portable" traveling companion. A spiral binding and sturdy allows this handy reference to weather extensive use while one enjoying the best a Lake Michigan vacation has to offer.

Illustrated Guide to Glacier Travel & Crevasse Rescue
Published in Paperback by Climbing Magazine (May, 2000)

Awesome BookGreat book with awesome pictures that help explain complex concepts about glacier travel. I'd buy this before Freedom of the Hills.
Awesome BookAs a beginner/intermediate climber this book covers all the necessary glacier-related issues. The pictures are great and help make complex concepts very easy to understand. Much better than the traditional texts (e.g. Freedom of the Hills) for Glacier Travel.
Manditory reading for all glacier travelers!I am the illustrator and co-author of this instructional book. This may seem like shameless self promotion, and I guess it is - but I am really proud of this totally cool book! There's two years of hard work crammed into these pages. Besides the all the drawings, I've done a whole lot of hands on work on glaciers in Alaska, Canada & the Cascades. Both Andy and I teach glacier rescue skills for an outdoor school (NOLS), and we've spent a lot of time trouble shooting and simplifying the complex systems you'll need know before setting foot on a glacier. Here's the bottom line - GLACIERS ARE DANGEROUS! Make sure you are educated (with this up-to-date book) if you plan on any kind of glacier travel! If nothing else, there are over 200 easy to read, step by step, technical illustrations that are fun to look at - and very informative!

Glacier Bay National Park, Alaska
Published in Paperback by Mark Kelley Photography (01 March, 2000)
Average review score:

I was thereWe went to Glacier Bay in August 2001 and I can truthfully say that Mr. Kelley's photo's captured what we saw. We never got as close to the brown bear and we didn't see a hoary marmot, but, hey, we're not professionals and we were just there for a week. The glacier shots are so perfect; just open your freezer, put on some warm clothes, look at those photos and save yourself a few thousand dollars in air-fare, etc.
Glacier Bay by Mark KelleyWe just came back from kayaking for a week in Glacier Bay and this boook captures the place and the experience beautifully! A "must have" book if you've been there to relive the experience or just to feel like you've been there without leaving home. A great book!
"Glacier Bay National Park, Alaska"I just bought this beautiful "coffee-table" book in Juneau 2 weeks ago. We had spent almost an entire day cruising Glacier Bay. This is the first collection of pictures I've ever seen that truly does justice to the majesty of the place. I love it so much I'm buying another as a gift. You can tell Mark Kelly lives in and loves this very special part of the world. This guy is gifted!

Beautiful and Informative Photographic JournalIn this first volume of "Glaciers Secrets", George Ostrum delights readers with humor, excellent photography, and some very intriguing insight into one of the most beautiful places in the world; Glacier National Park- which he has hiked and explored his entire life. One becomes aware upon reading this book, that there is an emotional connection between the author and his special place. It produces some fun reading, and the adventurous will be prompted to explore the trails of the "Crown of the Continent" for themselves.
A unique and wonderful look at GlacierThis book is thoroughly enjoyable from the first page. Local hero George Ostrom and his trailblazing geezer friends "the Over-the-hill gang", hike to incredibly beautiful places that most of us will never see.

Physics of Glaciers

An excellent introduction to theoretical glaciology. This is the 3rd edition of a classical university textbook. It is an introduction to the behaviour of glaciers and ice sheets from a theoretical point of view. A wide range of subjects are treated e.g. ice dynamics, mass balance, climatology, ice core analysis, hydrology, thermal properties, etc. The equations governing the flow of valley glaciers, ice sheets and ice streams are presented along with the physical arguments.
A basic knowledge of mathematics and physics is an advantage.

Backcountry ranger in Glacier National Park, 1910-1913 : the diaries & photographs of Norton Pearl
Published in Unknown Binding by L. Lee ()
Average review score:

Life in Montana in the Olden DaysThis is an amazing book. The backcountry ranger's daughter compiled all of her father's notes about his time as a ranger in Glacier National Park in the 1910s. Unbelievable stories of beauty and hardship (he never complains about the difficulties but relishes the adventure). His language is full of colloquialisms and it is really funny. If you have spent any time in Glacier Park, this book is a must-have. You will recognize the places he talks about before there were trails or roads. Or if you enjoy history and the outdoors, it's a great read.

Best Easy Day Hikes Glacier and Waterton Lakes (FalconGuide)
Published in Paperback by Falcon Publishing Company (May, 1998)
Average review score:

Very Good for the MoneyIts construction is not as durable as one would like for a reference to carry with you while hiking, but what can one expect for that small an asking price? However, the descriptions and maps for each hike are easy to understand--even for the novice hiker. 25 easy hikes are included in the book, with distance, degree of difficulty, time required, and elevation change included. There are no pictures in the book, but still its very well done.
